Is AI the Bad Guy? Or Are We Just Looking at This All Wrong?

Spoiler: the villain might not be AI—it might be us. Gulp.

As artists, we tend to clutch our paintbrushes (or styluses, or chisels, or glitter cannons) and back away slowly when someone utters the word “technology.” At best, we tolerate it. At worst, we eye it like it’s about to steal our soul, outsource our creativity, and declare itself the new Picasso. 🤖🎨

And then along came AI.

My AI Spiral: From Fascination to Fury

When I first stumbled into the AI world around 2022, I was intrigued. It could generate images. It could write stories. It felt like a strange, powerful magic… until I realised how it was doing all that.

They were training AI on our art.
Our books.
Our music.
Without permission.

Cue: the rage. The outrage. The journal scribbling and dramatic declarations like “They’re stealing our souls and calling it data!”

Because let’s be honest—parts of our creative work were being scraped and regurgitated by machines with zero regard for copyright, consent, or cosmic balance. Not cool.

So… Is AI Evil?

Here’s the twist in the tale: I don’t think so.
Not anymore.

Yes, it can be used unethically.
But AI itself? It’s just a tool. And tools are shaped by the hands that wield them.

Once I let that idea land (after much stomping and swearing), I realised something huge: AI isn’t here to replace artists. It’s here to shake up the system.

Have You Seen AI Art?

Let’s talk visuals.

Once I calmed down enough to actually look at AI art without muttering spells, I noticed something: a lot of it looks the same. You can usually spot it a mile off. Why?

Because the heart is missing. The soul.
That indescribable spark only a human can bring.

So sure, AI might generate a piece that sells for millions.
But so did a BANANA TAPED TO A WALL.
(I will never stop bringing this up.)

That’s not an AI problem. That’s a contemporary art scene problem. 🍌😂

(And yes … I taped a banana to a wall. Because … research. Because … art. Because … chaos.😆🍌)

What If AI Could Actually Help Us?

Let’s flip this.

What if, instead of fearing AI, we made it work for us?

Imagine a world where:

  1. Universal Basic Income becomes a thing (yes, economists have been yelling about it for decades).
  2. Shorter working weeks are normal (hi, Iceland!).
  3. Humanoid robots clean your house, pay your bills, and do the dishes (bless them).
  4. AI handles the admin—invoicing, planning, marketing, idea generation, editing, even coaching support.

That’s hours of boring, brain-draining stuff GONE—leaving you free to create, dream, rest, and actually enjoy being a creative business owner again.

✨ Less burnout.
✨ More freedom.
✨ Maybe even joy.

So… Is AI the Bad Guy?

Not to me. Not anymore.

Yes, it can be manipulated by bad people. But so can literally everything else.
AI has mind-blowing potential—to free us, to support us, to revolutionise how we live and work as artists.

So maybe it’s time we stop fearing it, and start asking:

What could this mean for us, if we embraced it?

Your Turn, Artists 💬

I’d love to know your thoughts.

Are you using AI in your creative practice?
Are you terrified? Curious? Full of rage?
Have you made peace with it, or are you still side-eyeing it from the studio corner?

Drop your thoughts in the comments or send me a psychic transmission (or just, you know, use the form).
